John Murphy

John is a leader of the firm’s valuation and transaction opinions team. He conducts valuations in connection with business succession, ESOPs, estate and gift tax matters, marital dissolutions, purchase price allocations, goodwill impairment studies, and mergers, acquisitions, and divestitures.

John is instrumental in providing financial advisory services in connection with the implementation of ESOPs. He also represents buyers and sellers of middle market companies, and has negotiated and structured complex recapitalizations, leveraged and management buyouts, corporate acquisitions, and family business transfers, to include the placement of senior and subordinated debt.

Professional Involvement & Certification

John is an active member of The ESOP Association and the National Center for Employee Ownership (NCEO). He has been a featured speaker at national conferences held by these organizations on business succession and valuation issues. John also frequently speaks to employee and professional groups, boards of directors, and ESOP trustees.

John is designated as an Accredited Senior Appraiser (ASA) in Business Valuation by the American Society of Appraisers. He is a Master Certified Business Appraiser (MCBA) as well as a Certified Valuation Analyst (CVA) as granted by the National Association of Certified Valuators and Analysts (NACVA).

Professional Experience

Prior to Chartwell, John was President of Atlantic Management Company. John has held roles with McLaughlin Research Corporation and the United States Air Force Electronic Security Command, where he was a military intelligence analyst and served in the United States, Japan, and Greece.
